Established in 1994 and operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC) is the premier institution dedicated to promoting science and technology in the Republic of Mauritius. It was initiated through an Act of Parliament in June 1994, and and set up in collaboration with India's National Council of Science Museums (NCSM). RGSC opened its doors to the public on 30 November 2004. RGSC supplements formal education through interactive exhibits, non-formal programmes, and public outreach, fostering a culture of scientific curiosity and innovation.
Mandate and Vision
RGSC's mandate is to enhance public understanding of science and technology, supplement school curricula, and inspire creativity, particularly among youth. Its vision is to be a hub for informal science education, driving awareness of global scientific advancements and nurturing a scientifically literate society. Core objectives include promoting STEM education, encouraging innovation, and democratizing access to scientific knowledge.
Key Functions
The Centre organizes dynamic exhibitions, workshops, and hands-on activities tailored for schools and communities. It hosts events like the National Science Week, national science contests, astronomy awareness programmes, and national commemorative days. RGSC also offers facility rentals, exhibit design services, and custom science activities, ensuring engaging, accessible learning experiences for all ages.
Powers
As a statutory body under Parliament, RGSC holds the authority to design and implement informal science education initiatives, collaborate with national and international institutions, and manage resources to fulfill its mandate. Operating under the Ministry's framework, it leverages partnerships, such as with NCSM India, to deliver impactful programmes aligned with national educational goals.
