The Mauritius Institute of Biotechnology Ltd (MIBL), established in October 2021, is a national leader driving innovation and excellence in biotechnology. As a strategic entity under the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, MIBL focuses on advancing cutting-edge research, commercialization of biotech solutions, project implementation and development of the pharmaceutical sector to position Mauritius as a hub for scientific and industrial progress in the region. 

Mandate and Vision 

MIBL's mandate is to accelerate the development of the biotechnology sector while fostering high-impact research across all biotechnology sectors. Its vision is to transform Mauritius into a self-reliant, globally competitive biotech economy through collaboration with international organizations, academia, and industry players and global partners.   

Key Functions

MIBL is the institutional responsible for spearheading the development of the biotechnology sector including medical biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology, marine biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnology and capacity building. MIBL promotes the biotechnology sector, facilitates implementation of projects, provides financing for biotech projects and acts to foster a conducive and competitive biotech ecosystem in Mauritius.

Powers

MIBL operates under a national framework empowering it to forge international partnerships, oversee pharmaceutical production and implement biotech projects. It holds authority to engage in technology transfer, provide funding, and recommend quality standards and regulatory changes to ensure competitivity and compliance with global regulatory practices.
